Week 2: Serenity

Time: 2500
Place: Serenity spaceship, distant solar system from Earth
Message: Beware of overcrowding and be wary of the government! With the help of a psychic teenager, the crew of the Serenity discover the government's biggest secret. The government (Alliance) tried out an experimental drug which killed 90% of the population of planet Miranda and turned the remaining 10% into cannibalistic Reavers. Earth became overcrowded long ago and humans had to take over other solar systems. After a war between the Alliance and the rebels (Independents), the Alliance won and now rules the universe. Serenity is a pirate vessel which takes on various jobs to make money. The crew winds up uncovering the truth about what happened on Miranda and the Alliance's credibility is damaged.

Week 1: Avatar

Time: 2154
Place: Pandora - Earth-like moon six years away from Earth
Message: Respect nature and don't be imperialists! In the distant future, Earth has become a complete wasteland and a mining company equipped with mercenaries travels to Pandora to mine a precious mineral. Humans did not take care of Earth, and have to now scour distant planets to obtain resources. While humans originally try to befriend and work with the native Na'vi people, the mining company gets tired of waiting and decides to attack the moon. The main human character is accepted as a Na'vi warrior and he leads the charge against the evil mining company. The Na'vi get help from the native fauna of Pandora to defeat the company and send the humans back to Earth.

Welcome

Welcome to my blog about Space Moviez. For my 2010 New Year's Resolution, I decided to view one space-related movie a week. I tried to pick 53 of the most epic space moviez ever created. Each week I will watch a new movie, and then explain on this blog my thoughts on how it helps shape debate in outer space policy. I plan on outlining the time and place the movie takes place, along with the message it is trying to convey. Enjoy!
